Fate of dissolved organic matter released by Cyanobacteria in an eutrophic reservoir (Tietê River): studies of processes

Abstract

Cyanobacteria of Barra Bonita Reservoir, which is formed by the junction of Piracicaba and Tietê Rivers comprising an area of circa 384 km2, produce yearly a huge biomass not yet specifically quantified. A great part of this biomass, when dies, suffers decomposition liberating huge amounts of DOM. On the other hand, live cells release, also, high amounts of DOM through active and/or passive processes. All this biomass composed of DOM are then involved in interaction cycles in the surrounding environment, many of these with ending points while inside the reservoir. This work proposes a quantitative and qualitative study of the release and the fate of DOM produced by the most important phytoplankton species pertaining to Cyanobacteria, in terms of biomass production, in the reservoir. In this project we propose to study the effects of cell age, PAR irradiance, and UV radiation in the release of DOM, including cyanotoxins, using species isolated in axenic cultures and of natural populations of Microcystis spp (from surface blooms). It is aimed also to investigate the effects of photodegradation in the bioavailability of DOM and in metal complexes. Regarding the interactions of DOMt/environrnent, we will focus the associations potentially specific between Cyanobacteria and bacteria, related to DOMt and the transfer of carbon from DOM and EPS to bacteria. We Rim to verify the role of EPS of each species in the production of TEP, AGEL and humic substances, as well as to characterize them chemically, identifying the hydrolases involved in their degradation. We intend to couple studies of hydrodynamics to the formation of AGEL and TEP and to the distribution of cells in the photic column. (AU)
