Use of lambari Deuterodon iguape as an alternative to live bait for estuarine sport fishing.

Abstract

Fishing tourism is continually growing in Brazil, fisherfolk attend the demand of recreational fishing, capturing and selling live shrimp to be used as live baits. This study aims to verify the possibility of using the lambari Deuterodon iguape as live bait for estuarine sport fishing, analyzing lethal concentration (LC50), calculated by statistical method Trimmed Spearman-Karber, at different salinity conditions; and metabolic changes for each tested salinity. The effects of salinity on D. iguape routine metabolism will be evaluated through hematologic analysis, oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion, using sealed respirometers. The salinity treatments will be analyzed 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35g L-1. The difference between the concentrations of oxygen and ammonia determined at the beginning and end of the confinement, represent the consumption and excretion during the defined period of the experiment. The specific average oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion by the D. iguape will be evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test (p <0.05). Posteriorly, the efficiency of the use of D. iguape as live bait in fishing for robalo (Centropomus spp.) wil be evaluated. Six boats will be used with two anglers each, working at Baixada Santista region and who traditionally use white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti as live baits. Three field trips will be monitored for each fishing boat, with 12 stick bids for each output, six with shrimp and six with D. iguape. The number of fish hooked will be recorded for each bait as well as the time duration of the fishery. The results will be evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA). (AU)
