Abstract

Radiotherapy is one of the most common methods for the treatment of cancer. However, ionizing radiation causes deleterious effects on tissues from oxidative stress, a phenomenon in which there is evidence of involvement of renin-angiotensin system (RAS). The action of the radiation in testicular tissues can significantly affect reproductive capacity, and to cause temporary, prolonged or permanent azoospermia, depending on the treatment time and radiation dose. In attempt to prevent or minimize such damage, the use of radio-protective agents may increase the radio-sensitivity threshold of the adjacent healthy tissues, thus allowing the use of higher doses of radiation on the tumor tissues. Whereas the presence of an intrinsic RAS in the male genital system has been reported, which participate in physiological processes such as spermatogenesis, it is important to investigate whether RAS inhibitors are able to prevent or mitigate the effects of radiation on reproductive tissues, as their effectiveness in preventing the development or mitigation of cell damage was observed in other tissues irradiated.
