Abstract

Currently, Sparassidae includes 1150 species in 83 genera distributed worldwide. Based on the suprageneric classification proposed by Simon and results of a recent cladistic analysis the family is divided into ten subfamilies (Chrosioderminae, Clastinae, Deleninae, Eusparassinae, Heteropodinae, Palystinae, Polybetinae, Sparassinae, Sparianthinae and Staianeinae). Of these, five include genera with Neotropical distribution (Eusparassinae, Heteropodinae, Polybetinae, Sparassinae and Sparianthinae). Over the past decade Eusparassinae, Heteropodinae, Polybetinae and Sparassinae were intensely studied, with most Neotropical genera revised or newly described. Sparianthinae however, still needs attention. The subfamily currently includes 14 genera, of which five are exclusively Neotropical (Decaphora Franganillo, Defectrix Petrunkevitch, Pseudosparianthis Simon, Sparianthis Simon and Uaiuara Rheims) and one has wider distribution range, but includes Neotropical species (Stasina Simon). Of these only Decaphora and Uaiuara were recently revised. This project represents another step towards the understanding of the systematics of the family Sparassidae in the Neotropical region and aims to expand the knowledge on the systematics of Sparianthinae revising and describing genera within a phylogenetic context, testing their monophyly and relocating the species based on the most parsimonious trees.
