Magnification effect on work posture in Dentistry

Abstract

This study aims to observe the effect of magnifying lenses on working posture while performing restorative dental procedures. For this, two laboratory experimental studies will be carry out. For experiment 1 the visual acuity of dental students with five different visual conditions (natural vision, vision with simple magnifying loupe with 3.5x increase, with Galilean system loupe with 2.5x increase; Keplerian system loupe with 3.5x increase and surgical microscope with 6.4x increase) and working distance operator's eyes/phantom mouth in two levels (30 to 40 cm and distance free choice of operator, according comfort) will be evaluated. The angular deviations of neck and trunk from neutral position will be assessed. Visual acuity will be measured by an E-optotypes table located in the distal cavity of the maxillary first molars. Photographs will be held during the assessment of visual acuity, allowing the calculation of measurements of angular deviation for each visual condition. The experiment 2 proposes to determine the effect of four visual conditions (direct vision, simple magnifying loupe, Galilean system loupe; Keplerian system loupe) and experience of the operator on the concepts of Dentistry and Ergonomics in Dentistry (undergraduate student and student graduate) on the working posture, while conducting cavity preparations Class I in all first molars. The working posture will be record by videotapes. The video's evaluation will be by the method "Ergonomic Posture Assessment in Dentistry" (MAPETO). The quality of the preparations also will be considered, through a rating system. For both experiments will be carried out descriptive statistical analysis and verification of normality and homoscedasticity assumptions. In experiment 1, it will be performed analysis of variance (ANOVA) paired to two factors and a correlation matrix will be designed to check the angular deviations from the working distance adopted for each magnification system. In experiment 2, two way ANOVA and Tukey's post-test will be performed. For the concordance between different operators the Blend-Altman method will be performed. The significance level will be 5%.
