Abstract

Popular global marketplaces, often marked by informality, have become an inescapable part of the economic life and the urban landscapes of emerging and developing countries. These markets - the marketplaces and the commercial circuits that structure them - are now affected by significant changes, both from the point of view of the actors who participate in them and from the way they are inscribed in space. The request of resources FAPESP and CNRS aims to create conditions for dialogue between two teams working on these changes: one of them in Brazil (focused in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro); the other one in three countries in North Africa - Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. The common point of the changes observed in these areas - despite the fact that they are geographically and culturally very different - is the reconfiguration of these markets. Formerly operated by actors of the so-called “globalization from below”, nowadays driven by actors with increased economic capacities, these markets are also subject to new apparatus of control and management, including legal measures, urban development policies and strategies for controlling the conflicts resulting from these reconfigurations. The two teams have a common work history, with joint publications on these topics. The emergence of the same kind of markets in Europe (France and Spain) will be also covered in the dialogue that is intended. (AU)
