Abstract
This project contributes to an ongoing research effort in combining two techniques used for mesh adaptation in evolutionary partial differential equations used in hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic models. Namely, the wavelet-based multiresolution regularity detection methodology with the generic block-structured mesh adaptation software AMROC (Adaptive Mesh Refinement in Object-oriented C++). The overarching objective is the development of a three-dimensional parallel dynamically adaptive finite volume solver that will permit fast and reliable space weather magnetohydrodynamic simulations. During this project, two and three-dimensional hydrodynamic and space plasma ideal magnetohydrodynamic models will be used to test the present and new developments in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. Subsequently, technically relevant configurations of space physics instabilities will be studied. During the proposed visits, discussion sessions and short courses will be offered. Moreover, we plan small scientific meetings (mini-symposia) in well established conferences and in the University of Southampton to discuss these subjects with the community and organize future joint projects.
