Abstract

There are over 100 different types of so-called cancer diseases that have in common the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells with invasive potential. The cancer may be treated with chemotherapeutic drugs which do not distinguish normal cells and cancer cells, and it may cause ototoxicity and neurotoxicity. The objective of this study is to implement the Audiology and Electrophysiology Service in the Child Cancer Treatment Institute (ITACI), Hospital das Clinicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo, evaluating and monitoring the peripheral and central auditory pathway of children and adolescents with cancer undergoing chemotherapy for a minimum period of one year of chemotherapy, and checking the occurrence of peripheral and central auditory impairment in this population. For this, there will be a clinical, longitudinal and prospective study in children and adolescents with cancer, aged 2-20 years undergoing chemotherapy in ITACI. Children and adolescents with cancer treated at ITACI between April 2016 to April 2017 will participate in this research, and they will start chemotherapy at this time, being monitored by a minimum of one year. The type of cancer will be featured, as well as the type and dosage of medication used, in order to draw a profile of the participants in this study population. All children 2-6 years will be submitted to otoscopy, immitanciometry, pure tone audiometry (500Hz to 4000Hz and 8000Hz if possible), speech audiometry, TEOAE, DPOAE, ABR and LLAEP (P1, N1, P2, N2 components) before the start of chemotherapy 1st cycle and the other cycles performed. Patients between 7 and 20 years will be submitted to otoscopy, immittanciometry, pure tone audiometry (250-8000 Hz), high frequency audiometry (9000Hz to 20,000 Hz), speech audiometry, TEOAE, DPOAE, ABR and LLAEP (P1, N1, P2, N2 and P300 components) before the start of chemotherapy 1st cycle and the other cycles performed.
