Abstract
The RFID Technology is an exceptionally good platform for the development of cheap and efficient wireless sensors. It´s integration with systems and mobile devices has the potential to transform the way we collect data from the environment around us (e.g. pressure, temperature, humidity, luminosity, etc.), equipment (damages, physical shock, positioning), processes and even people (In a hospital environment for instance). In industrial, supply chain and shop floor environments, this improved and facilitated form of data collection has the potential to convey information faster and much more efficiently. This allows for informed decision-making and in turn for the employment of preventive and predictive actions based on real, up to date data. As a result, companies can optimize resource use and keep processes under tight control. In this context, this project aims to develop a new RFID based passive sensing platform in order to improve the efficiency of transportation systems through tire management. These assets are usually the third greatest cost for transportation companies, falling behind maintenance and fuel costs only (D., et al., 2014). With focus on the delivery of hardware and software developed and integrated in an innovative way, the system will allow for the wireless and automated acquisition of both calibration pressure data and internal temperature data in commercial tires, in a faster and more accurate way than the current procedures. The project is based on a product version developed with the assistance and support of FAPESP (PIPE Project - Savetyre®). This version´s RFID Tag is capable of identifying a tire throughout its entire lifespan but not of collecting information on its internal state, which is the scope of this current technology innovation project. A new business intelligence system will be developed together with the new sensing components. Said system will be responsible for the processing and presentation of data to the end user. Due to the characteristics of this new sensing system, this software will have a larger and more accurate amount of data at its disposal, in turn allowing for a more intelligent and efficient management of tires than that provided by its previous version, Savetyre® PC v2.0. As a direct result, it will be possible to reduce operational costs and resource wasting as well as the environmental impact of transportations leading to the innovative transformations of the processes of use, maintenance and management of tires by logistics operators. The innovation lies, therefore, not only in the technology itself but also in the new data collection and management processes directly supported by it. It lies in the conjoint solution of integrated identification and passive sensing for tires and in the introduction of cutting edge technology in usually low tech environments such as tire shops. In environments such as the ones of Brazilian transportation companies, where the management of tires is rather rudimentary, the potential for the relative cost reduction of tires is estimated to stabilize around the 40% mark.
