Abstract

Suber is a surface tissue of stems and roots of terrestrial vascular plants. Its constituents are polymeric substances, such as suberin, as well as fatty extractives and other constituents. The present project aims to characterize chemically the suber of two species of Aspidosperma and two of Erythroxylum. Soluble fatty substances will be isolated and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. An evaluation of the taxonomic potential of these substances will be carried out with multivariate analysis. Suber is also a source of biologically active substances. Analyses will be carried out to detect constituents with antioxidant and antiacethylcholinesterase activity of suber extracts by means of bioautography of thin layer chromatograms. Active substances will be isolated and identified by means of spectroscopic procedures. (AU)
