Abstract

The natural products can have molecular structures with a fantastic architecture, mostly resulted from the action of diverse enzymes in simple starting molecules. While the initial steps in the biosynthetic routes of these substances are in the majority already well known, the authors of the posterior modifications are of difficult recognition and generally are attributed to catabolic processes. It has already an ample acceptance that microorganisms can coexist with plants during all its seasonal cycles. Literature data seem to corroborate the hypothesis that in many cases it is possible that different enzyme can participate in a supposed "cooperative biosynthesis" between plants and microorganisms that would result in poli-functionalized natural products molecules. Thus, the present project represents a continuation(*) of the efforts made in the Laboratório de Bioquímica Micromolecular de Microorganismos (LaBioMMi), Depto. of Chemistry at UFSCar, aiming at contributions in understanding the accumulation of important natural products in vegetal tissues. In this stage, we intend to isolate endophytic microorganisms from terpenoid accumulating plants and to verify the production of diterpenes by these endophytes. Abundant diterpenes isolated from endophyte host plants will be submitted to biological and/or chemical structural modifications. The biochemical intimacy developed during the interactions between plants and microorganisms may serves as a good guide to find useful enzyme capable of to transform natural products isolated from microorganisms host plant, and their synthetic analogues, generating bioactive substances. A platform of bioassays will be used to evaluate the potentialities for uses of these compounds in human health problems, although the central question under investigation in the project is related with understanding the terpenoid biosynthesis.
