Nb-Ti and Ti-Nb-Zr orthopaedic prosthesis obtained through selective laser melting

Abstract

The goal for this project is develop an orthopedic prosthesis production method for Nb-Ti and Ti-Nb-Zr alloys, including Selective Laser Melting technique whose main characteristics are: i) freedom design capabilitie, convenient to prosthesis customization, ii) process conducted by computational system to reproduce geometric information contained in image files, iii) flexibility to material specification, iv) possibility to introduce controlled porosity at the component. Such characteristics are suitable on solving problems concerning on customizing prosthesis. The exploitation of this technique, however, requires mastery of the relationship between process parameters and the quality of the prosthesis mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and surface finish.
