Abstract

Noroviruses, important causes of viral gastroenteritis outbreaks, have particularities such as low infective dose; persistence in the environment for weeks; aerosol formation during vomiting episodes and contaminated feces and resistance to disinfection. Therefore, a consensus and the scientific background tells about the necessity of surface disinfection where health professionals have touched. However, gaps are found in the scientific literature about floor contamination. The aim of this research will be to evaluate the air contamination from norovirus particles after the floor cleaning only in comparison to the air contamination after cleaning followed by disinfection and cleaning followed by decontamination with ultraviolet light. The present work deals with experimental and laboratorial studies in which the experiments will be performed as follows: nonporous and porous plates that represent the floor from health and medical centres (granite and vinyl flooring) will be contaminated with norovirus samples and will receive different types of treatments (Group 1- cleaning, Group 2- cleaning and disinfection using sodium hypochlorite 5000 ppm, Group 3 - cleaning and ultraviolet light). For the negative control group, samples from surfaces and air will be collected after plate's sterilization; for the positive control, samples from intentionally contaminated surfaces and air. The air samples will be collected by using the Coriolis air sampler and the surface samples collected with cotton swabs. For norovirus recovery samples, the chosen technique is reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-qPCR). (AU)
