Correlation with different clinical stages in patients with Parkinson's disease and neuropathic pain: validation of the Rotterdam Elderly Pain Observation Scale (REPOS)

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive degenerative disease that affects the substantia nigra compact as well as other regions of the brain and other organs. Pain is a distressing non-motor symptom experienced by up 85% of people with PD and is often not expressed being unidentified. The scale of observation of pain in the Elderly (RESET) is a range of observational pain differs from other scales, including adults and seniors with limited communication without needing to communicate verbally, not yet validated for the Portuguese language. We wish to know if the motor changes associated with PD may be hiding the manifestation of pain. Objectives: (a) to monitor, discuss and analyze the application of REPOS in elderly patients at Erasmus MC; (b) Validate the translation of REPOS; (c) application in patients with PD and neuropathic pain. Methodology: will be included 20 healthy volunteers matched with 20 patients with PD and 20 with Neuropathic Pain. Patients should be observed for 2 minutes, during consultation, physical and neurological examination. Prevalence and behaviors of co-occurrences will be analyzed and identified. Will apply to Numeric Rating Scale, and REPOS, will run in the Pain Clinic and Disease Clinic Extra Pyramidal HCFMRP-USP, providing better treatment for patients with Neuropathic Pain and PD. These bilateral missions will encourage meetings, trainings, presentations and publications. (AU)
