The effectiveness of aerobic and resistance training in smoking cessation, and biochemical and functional parameters.

Abstract

Smoking is considered a major worldwide public health problem and despite being one of the most relevant causes of worldwide preventable death, it is also responsible for about 6 million deaths per year and physical inactivity, for about 3.2 million. The physical inactivity in smokers is related to depressive disorders and high levels of nicotine's dependence, which also contributes to low exercises tolerance. The use of exercise as a tool for smoking cessation showed that it is possible to reduce the withdrawal symptoms of smoking, craving and anxiety, thus improving the lack of concentration and control weight gaining, which facilitates attempts abandonment and success in smoking cessation. Aerobic exercise has a fundamental role in controlling symptoms related to withdrawal symptoms, such as craving and stress, as there is a significant reduction in plasma cortisol levels present in cigarette smokers. Resistance exercise is beneficial both gain muscle strength and in minimizing post smoking cessation weight gain. Most studies related to exercise and smoking cessation had no standardization in their protocols, so the implementation of two standardized training protocols in smokers: aerobic and resistance could answer non clarified questions.
