Tropical mesopause temperature estimate from meteor radar measurements

Abstract

Since the 1990 decade, Meteor Radar measurements had been used to estimate the temperature of the mesopause region. However, the results obtained through used techniques were not considered satisfactory and some studies have been conducted objecting the improvment of the temperature estimate. In this sence, the present project proposes to develop a variant of the existent methods to estimate the mesopause temperature in the tropics based on the decay time of the meteor echoes. For this purpose measurements obtained by Meteor Radar in São João do Cariri (7,4°S, 36,5°O),from August 2004 to October 2009 and Cachoeira Paulista (22,7°S, 45°O)for the time interval March 1999 to July 2006, September 2007 to October 2008, and the measurements obtained from July 2012 to now, will be used.
