Abstract

The educational cinema became a solid integrating piece of the developing Brazilian visual culture particularly after the creation of the National Institute of Educational Cinema (Instituto Nacional de Cinema Educativo), in 1937, as part of a larger project of nation construction, which had one of its bases on the education of the masses. This research aims at investigating the institute's filmic production, regarding not only its circulation and reception (insertion in schools and movie theaters), but also the internal analysis of the movies. In order to do so, this work comprehends a theoretical discussion built from propositions of Fredric Jameson (the U.S.A.) and Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes (Brazil), authors who discuss the status of the cinema and its relation to ideological issues in countries perceived as "peripheral". In addition to that, authors belonging to the so called Sociology of Art, such as Pierre Francastel and Pierre Sorlin, offer the methodological support for the internal approach of the filmic object, what enables the raising of questions considered relevant in the universe of relations among education, culture and society.
