Abstract

The research project Indian Ocean Aesthetics. "Transnational Imaginative Geographies" in visual and written narratives from the African continent is situated in the fields of Comparative African Literatures, Postcolonial Theory and Indian Ocean Studies and aims at analysing different representations - literature, documentary photography and visual arts - from several contexts of the African continent - Mozambique, Djibouti, Somalia, , Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritius, Madagascar, among others -. Addressing the Indian Ocean as a comparative transnational paradigm (Hofmeyr, 2007) and, simultaneously, as a "transnational imaginative geography" (Ghosh & Muecke, 2007) the aim is to address representations from the African Indian Ocean (Alpers, 2000) as "practices of knowledge production and capitalization" (Hountondji, 1997; 2002) and therefore as "aesthetic and epistemological experiences" (Canclini, 2013) that are crucial in order to (re)think the critical grammar of the postcolonial condition.
