Abstract

The applicability of welding to advanced high-strength steels directly in the bainitic field was proven by a Research Fellowship Abroad (grant 2014/26930-7) of the applicant. As a means to internalize the technology and to apply to a broadly used aerospace material, this proposal seeks to experimentally develop the laser welding at high temperatures of maraging steels directly on the aged form. Maraging steels have been used for the rocket engine of Brazilian missiles and satellite launchers. This process allows a significant gain in quality of welded components, since they will present the microstructure and the mechanical behavior similar to the bulk material, and without the need for the expensive and weakness inducers heat treatments. Besides the technological aspect, the project aims to advance the theoretical understanding of the welding metallurgy of these steels with use of thermodynamic computer simulations and finite element modeling.
