Abstract

The proposed development and technological innovation with potential industrial application is based on the reuse of final waste and by-product coproduced in two major production chains already well established in the Brazilian industry, the foundry industry and metallurgy of special alloys of copper and the biodiesel industry. thus this proposed innovation focuses on the treatment / processing of waste with the main objective to add value to these products. The residue from the foundry industry and metallurgy of special copper alloys, slag, is employed as feedstock for the synthesis of molecular sieves containing copper in their structures for subsequent use as heterogeneous catalysts in the glycerol conversion reactions coproduced in the industry biodiesel. The same molecular sieves are used in the biodiesel production chain as a purifying agent of biodiesel obtained by routes where it is customary to use low-quality raw materials. In the same sense the obtained molecular sieves are used as agents purifying crude glycerol co-produced in the biodiesel industry. The synthesized molecular sieves and characterized physic-chemically will be used specifically as heterogeneous catalysts in glycerol conversion reactions, co-produced in the biodiesel industry , in order to obtain products with higher added value. The presence of transition metals such as copper in industrial waste and which can be employed in the synthesis of molecular sieves, material to implement features related to the catalytic oxidation-reduction reactions. As described in literatura1-3 the presence of copper favors the glycerol reduction reactions converting it into chemical products with higher added value such as 1,2 and 1,3-propanediol compared to glycerol. Also within the following biodiesel processing / glycerol these synthesized materials will be applied within the biodiesel production chain as purification agents of crude glycerol co-produced in the biodiesel industry, as well as biodiesel obtained from sources with high impurity content (oils degummed and animal offal). The molecular sieves because they have very versatile physical-chemical characteristics such as ion exchange capacity and adsorption will be employed as agents purifying biodiesel favoring the whitening of this fuel synthesized by a route considered dirty and low cost. In this step the co-produced glycerol can be filtered by the same molecular sieves, thus decreasing the glycerol treatment steps (currently there are three steps) to get it with a high degree of purity and thereby lowering costs just by decreasing the number of steps in the purification process. The process will be carried out in columns, initially at laboratory scale (glass columns), they will be filled with materials developed and biodiesel and or glycerol will be deposited on top of the column and so elute through the material by the gravity of the action. At the end of the process will be observed parameters such as color and final appearance of the product, the amount of sulfur and phosphorus using the techniques of atomic emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma and molecular fluorescence for both biodiesel and glycerol products (AU)
