Abstract

Our research group is the pioneer in the development of tasks based on the use of concept maps with errors (CwE). Made by the teacher, the CwE has been shown as an innovative way to evaluate the students' conceptual understanding. The idea is to ask students to identify conceptual errors in CwE and explain the detected errors. Despite the promising results so far, one obstacle remains to be overcome: the time needed to correct the task and process the information obtained through paper-based CwE is high, preventing the teacher from offering feedback to students during the course. The objective of this research project is to develop and test an online system that allows the teacher (i) to create CwE, (ii) distribute tasks to students, (iii) interpret student responses, and (iv) provide accurate feedback according to the conceptual understanding of each of them. The Sero! platform, dedicated to the development of learning assessment activities using concept mapping, has been developed by Dr Brian Moon (Perigean LLC). It will be used to create the tasks based on CwE. The project contemplates 2 cycles of data collection within the scope of the discipline ACH 0131 Natural Sciences: Science, Culture and Society. The first cycle (2017, teaching assessment) will present 6 CwE tasks and student responses will be useful to identify the most challenging misconceptions. The second cycle (2018, evaluation of learning) will offer 9 CwE tasks, to verify the effect of the specific feedback to direct the re-study period (compare the performance of the students before and after the re-study period).
