Transatlantic research collaboration on gamifying educational applications

Abstract

This project for Research Mobility aims to bring together research teams form UK and Brazil to carry out research on the topic of gamification applied to education. Particularly, we will join our effort to work on three topics: 1) Development and validation of a methodology and tool to aid the implementation of gamified processes - this will be based on Dr. Shi's work on the Motivational Gamification Strategies which suggest Self-Determination Theory (SDT) rooted gamification strategies for gamifying educational applications and evaluating gamified processes. 2) Visualization of the gamification effects on the target audience. This will be accomplished by using the concept of Contextual Gamification which uses Open User Modelling to adaptively visualize gamification effects on target users according to the (social) interaction context; 3) Analysis related to the gamification process - this will be based on Dr. Shi's work on Learning Behavior Analytics which provides technical tools to analyze students' behavioral patterns of performing learning tasks on online learning platforms.
