Abstract

The objective of this project is, on the one hand, to study the political thinking of the Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul elites with regard to the taxation and military organization and, on the other hand, the conformation of the social profiles of the political key players of those provinces, in connection with important national players from different provinces. According to the specialized literature, the setting of the military and tax controls are the fundamental elements for the conformation of sovereignty, not only in relation to absolutism, but also to the liberal state. How did this topic arouse in Brazil during the Independence and the 1st Reign periods, with the dispute between the provinces and the central government? In a linguistic context where the terms federalism and confederalism were indistinctly used, within a vibrant political game full of very different conceptions? In line with my researches, the taxation and military organization topics appear to be central for the clarification of such indistinction. Adopting the current historiographical perspective about this period - with the proposition that the awareness about the sociopolitical and cultural processes that occurred at that time require the understanding of what happened regionally - I prepared a broader project to look at such dimensions, including Pernambuco, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, provinces chosen due to the peculiarity of their respective sociopolitical evolutions. As the first two were previously studied, at the moment, we should deepen the research with respect to the last two. (AU)
