Abstract

The project shows proposals that together aim to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling the skeletal muscle regeneration, as well as the mass recovery involved in this process. On this way, the knowledge of these processes is critical to establish new therapeutic strategies, aiming to maintain the skeletal muscle function and improve in quality of life. The capacity to regenerate is fundamental to muscular physiology, not only to repair large extensions of injury, but also to recovery the myofiber from damage induced by daily activity. In addition, the progressive loss of recovery capacity during aging is a key factor that results in infeasibility of myofibers and, consequently, loss of muscle mass and muscle force of contraction. For this reason, it is important to note that the muscle mass is decisive to full muscle tissue regeneration. Thus, the objective of this project is to identify and characterize the mechanisms involved in mitophagic process during the skeletal muscle regeneration, using models in vivo and muscle progenitor cell culture during differentiation. In parallel, we aim to analyze the relevance of Parkin for the cross-talk between mitochondria and sarcoplasmatic reticulum. Besides, we will use leucine supplementation as a therapeutic agent to investigate this amino acid ability to improve the skeletal muscle regeneration. (AU)
