Abstract
After sintering, cemented carbide inserts are ground in order to improve dimensional accuracy, integrity of their edges, rake and flank faces. The importance of this step in the manufacturing chain of cemented carbide inserts is related, among other factors, to the influence of surface roughness on the friction in the cutting region, to the effect of the geometry on the loads acting on the tool and to the reduction of tool life due to edge chipping. Considering the relevance of the study and optimization of such factors, a complete evaluation of the tool in terms of surface and edge quality, macro and micro geometry, is required. In this context, the acquisition of the multi-user equipment "Microscope for three-dimensional image analysis" aims to support the activities related to the associated project (2015/15622-2). Moreover, it will offer researchers from other institutions and companies the possibility of using the equipment for analysis not only of surfaces and geometries in general, but also of cutting tools, considering that, this equipment will be located in a laboratory with a machine dedicated to the preparation of cutting inserts.
