Abstract
Landscape change, due to activities such as urban development and expanding agriculture, have far reaching consequences for the sustainable provision of different ecosystem services, such as carbon storage/sequestration, water regulation, and pests/diseases control. Vet, our understanding of the socio-ecological processes that link the structure of landscapes with the provision of ecosystem services is currently limited, what severely hampers our ability to ensure the preservation of critical ecosystem services. This project will draw together an inter-disciplinary team from the University of Queensland (UQ), University of São Paulo (USP), and São Paulo State University (UNESP) to address this issue. The project will: i) develop a new conceptual basis for understanding the role of landscape structure for ecosystem services; ii) apply and test the framework with data from Brazil (Fapesp 2013/23457 -6) and Australia; and iii) assess the policy implications of those outputs, particularly regarding offsetting mechanism. We planned two missions (October 2017 at UQ, and February 2018 at USP/UNESP) when we will establish intensive collaborative working groups to achieve the project aims. A long-term collaborative strategy for international data synthesis and future funding will also be developed. This project will enhance links between UQ, USP and UNESP and place these institutions at the forefront of policy-relevant international research and traininq on ecosystem services. (AU)
