Abstract

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in women. The creation of accessible, accurate and fast biomarkers panels that allow the refining of the prognosis of these patients to better allocate the therapeutic resources is fundamental to increase the curability of this disease in its early stages before the development of detectable metastases by imaging methods. Methods that are based on analysis of expression of target genes for the generation of prognostic score that assists medical conduct are already available in the market, among which we highlight Oncotype Dx and MammaGene. However, they are not available for the vast majority of breast cancer patients because they are high-cost tests,. In a previous work, we devised a method of generating prognostic value scores based on the study of the 21 target genes contemplated by the commercial methods mentioned. This project aims to validate the use of this panel of expression of these 21 genes, with the objective of establishing a more complete, accurate, faster and more accessible prognostic model for the population for breast cancer, with accuracy and efficiency. A panel of biomarkers such as the one proposed here may: 1) better stratify the risk of relapse of a given patient; 2) better allocate adjuvant treatment alternatives and, at the same time, avoiding in some cases the use of more aggressive treatments, decrease the toxicity for these patients; 3) make the method more accessible to patients using the Unified Health System (SUS).
