Abstract

The goal of the current proposal is to have road ecology experts available in Brazil and help develop science based guidelines for the design and implementation of mitigation measures aimed at reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions and increasing safe crossing opportunities for wildlife along roads and railroads in Brazil. We aim to contribute to reaching these goals through teaching a road ecology course, providing road ecology lectures, and advising road ecology students at the Universidade de São Paulo and other universities in São Paulo state. The current application would allow Dr. Marcel Huijser, one of the foremost road ecologists, to teach and advise students for a period of three months. Dr. Katia Ferraz (Universidade de São Paulo, Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz) and Dr. Marcel Huijser already have a proven track record of working together based on a previous visit in 2014 supported by CAPES.
