Abstract
Tegumentary Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease with low lethality, not contagious, caused by a protozoan of the genus Leishmania, in Brazil, usually caused by Leishmania amazonensis, with several and increasing cases distributed throughout the national territory. Since 1915 to the present day the main form of treatment involves the administration of pentavalent antimonial or amphotericin B. Both treatments have several side effects that reduce the quality of life of patients. Since leishmaniasis therapies are scarce and all have numerous side effects, impairing and reducing the quality life of patient, it is necessary to develop new alternatives for the treatment of this disease. The present proposal aims at the development of a bio-curative for topical therapy of cutaneous leishmaniasis using bacterial cellulose matrix with the incorporation of a natural compound that shows antileishmanicidal activity, curcumin. The development of bacterial cellulose bio-curatives with the incorporation of curcumin formulations presents an innovative character and a promising alternative with economic viability for topical treatments of cutaneous leishmaniasis in relation to the other treatments available in the market.
