Management and Operation of Brazilian Ports: A comparative analysis between the ports of Santos, Paranaguá and Rio Grande

Abstract

Analyzing the efficiency of ports is an issue that has received attention from the specialized literature in the last decades, especially with regard to its relationship with the competitiveness of nations in international trade. Research already conducted indicates that the Brazilian ports have problems that drastically affect the country's trade balance. Much of this research focuses on aspects of port infrastructure, few studies suggest that management factors also influence the performance of Brazilian ports. In this sense, the main objective of this research is to identify, systematize and classify the most critical aspects of the operations management of the ports of Santos (SP), Paranaguá (PR) and Rio Grande (RS), three major export ports in the country. The research proposed here is qualitative, exploratory and will be made feasible through the Case Study. The development of this research can generate indicatives of improvement for the three ports investigated, with possibilities to broaden the discussions on the mechanisms of improvement and greater performance of the Brazilian ports.
