Abstract

The aim of the ongoing FAPESP project is to investigate in a fundamental levei aspects of plastic deformation in metallic materials at the nanoscale employing computational techníques.Cold spray (CS) is a high rate material deposition technique used to produce metallic coatings from micron-size feedstock powder particles. In CS, the powder particles are accelerated to achieve high impact velocities (up to 1000 m/s) upon the surface to be coated by means of a supersonic inert gas flow generated using a DeLaval nozzle. Upon impact with the substrate, the particles plastically deform as a results of shear adiabatic instability induced locally by the high strain rates (10 9 1/s). CS experiments have been carried in the group of Prof. Bertrand Jodoin at uOttawa for the past two decades. To reach the required level of understanding of the impact deformation process mechanisms occurring in CS, we propose a more fundamental and universal approach through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations combined with validation using experimental results...
