Abstract

GRUN will provide new insight into the physics behind remediation of contaminated groundwater resources using nanotechnology (nanoremediation). Specifically, in-situ degradation of chlorinated solvent contaminants within porous media by injection of aqueous suspensions of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (Fe0) is targeted. The proposed research builds on the previous works carried out by the visiting researcher, Dr. Tannaz Pak. Chlorinated solvent contaminants are among the most recalcitrant aquifer contaminants which can cause serious health problems such as kidney and liver damage, sudden abortions, and some are considered as carcinogenic. They are a significant problem, globally, due to their wide industrial use since the beginning of 20th century, e.g. in metal processing plants. (AU)
