Abstract This project is aimed at testing on Phaseolus vulgaris L. (FABACEAE), common bean, models based on the thermal-time and hydrotime concepts, and verify the feasibility of such models to describe the germination behaviour of the seeds under variable conditions of temperature and water potential. We intend to adapt such models to supra-optimum temperature levels, since the relatively high temperatures constitute a limiting factor for the germination process on tropical soils, differently from temperate climate zones. PEG solutions will be employed at the following water potentials: zero (distilled water, control); -0.1MPa, -0.2MPa; -0.3MPa; -0.4MPa; -0.6MPa; -0.8MPa; -1.0MPa. Each treatment will be carried out at different sub-optimum and supra-optimum temperatures, obtained from trials with constant temperatures (T). Two-way ANOVA will be used with eight levels of water potentials and six levels of temperature. Each combination of factors will be composed of five repetitions with at least 20 seeds per repetition. The experiment will be kept under fluorescent white light. The germination co will be recorded daily, using the radicle protrusion biological criterion. | |
