Abstract

Mouth cancer is the most frequent neoplasm of the head and neck, and its yearly incidence comprises near 390,000 new cases worldwide. Several studies indicate elevated epidemiologic indices for the disease in Brazil and in São Paulo. The disease’s etiology integrates endogenous genetic factors, and exogenous conditions, referring to environmental and behavioral expositions. Smoking, the frequent use of alcoholic drinks, and patterns of food intake had specifically been studied as factors modifying the risk profile of the disease. The current study aimed at focusing on other conditions of the mouth which can contribute for the atrophy of oral mucosa, thus increasing the likelihood of absorbing carcinogenic substances. In especial, the study will assess the history of lesions of soft tissue due to maladjusted dental prosthesis or dentofacial anomalies, irregular frequency of toothbrushing, and habitual intake of hot beverages. This case-control study comprises patients assisted at the head and neck ambulatory of a major Brazilian hospital (HC-FMUSP), and controls not affected by cancer enrolled in other units of the same hospital. The statistical analysis will comprise pairing and control for intervenient factors, and multivariate models of conditional logistic regression. Prospective results are expected to instruct health programs for the disease prevention. (AU)
