Abstract

The ceramic industries of the region of Santa Gertrudes are responsible for about 45% of the national production of ceramic tiles and coverings and use, in its great majority, materials of the Corumbataí Formation as base for the produced ceramic coating masses in the region. The Corumbataí Formation has as materials predominant mudstones and shales of gray color the made red intense. In lesser ratios, used to occur fine arenites, bone beds and still thin lodes of quartz and/or carbonates (calcite and/or dolomite). Integrant activities of research carried through by of the Group of Research "Quality in Ceramics" have demonstrated that, practically, all the stratigraphic column of this unit can be used for the ceramic coating production. The mineralogical and especially technological constitution, in such a way presents significant variation in the vertical line as in the horizontal line, decurrent of sedimentary, diagenetics aspects and supergenic alteration.Objectifying to map the different technological and geologic units, representable in scale 1:25.000, surveys of the fronts will be carried through of outcrops, distributed since the basal portion until the top of the Corumbataí Formation, in the region where they concentrate the activities of mining. For this, beyond the normal cartographic activities, bibliographical compilation, characterization of sedimentary and ceramic properties (gifts in the fronts and outcrops) and correlation between these will be executed. With intention to give it has supported to the stratigraphic and diagenetic interpretation will be determinate the limits of the Corumbataí/Irati/Pirambóia formations and the positioning of the intrusions of diabase in the area. The characterizations will be carried through through mineralogical, chemical and petrographics analyses (optic and electronic microscopy) and ceramic technological assays. (AU)
