Abstract

The implementation of pedagogical coordinator function (PCP) at public state schools in São Paulo is problematized based on results obtained from a previous study (Fernandes, 2004) based on both a bibliographical-documental research to explain the trajectory of this activity in São Paulo schools and on some analyses of recent researches about this job, analyzing the educational reforms for the constitution of teacher professionality, pointing out the main difficulties on daily work of the PCPs and some successful traits of this function . Emphasizing the importance of teacher development and teacher education , we recognize that the PCP formation lies beyond a university certificate and involves cultural, intellectual, professional, organizational, political and even personal aspects, which permit them both the appropriation of specific knowledge and knowledge that involves school culture and individual cultural capital itself. Under Brazilian educational context which shows a subtle game between technicism and neoliberalism getting along with educational progressive ideas , this doctoral dissertation project intends to investigate teacher development and professionality aspects related to PCP’s successful work. An empirical research on qualitative basis will be done , including heavy interviews and day-by-day observation, with six sucessful Middle and High School PCPs , from three different school counties, emphasizing the analyses of the professional development, highlighted by Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural capital concept , looking into explicative elements of sucess in their lives.
