Abstract

This project aims to study many aspects involved in bacterial communication systems based on the production and detection of acyl-homoserine lactones signalling substances. In phytopathogenic bacteria, it will be characterized the acyl-homoserine lactones produced by Erwinia rhapontici, and to investigate if this substances can control the expression of pigments/siderophores in this species. The bacterial communication will also be studied in Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, which represents an important bacterial strain due to its capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen in sugarcane tissues. Finally, the interferences of eukaryots in the bacterial communication processes will be studied through the bio-guided fractionation of maize leaves extracts, in order to investigate the production of substances with the same biological activity of acyl-homoserine lactones (agonists).
