Abstract The main goal of the project is to develop a nonlinear finite element model that represents the dynamics of submerged cables, taking into account large rotations and the coupling between torsion and bending. This model must be able to represent the dynamic behavior of a cable under dynamic compression, in the post-buckling regime. It will be implemented in a computational tool which must simulate the time-domain dynamic behavior of a flexible pipe or umbilical cable under random loads. The other goal is to linearize that model, studying the linearization hypotheses and to verify the range of validity of those hypotheses and to identify under which situations the linear model is applicable.
