Abstract

The fire ant Solenopsis saevissima is responsible for most accidents involving insect stings in Brazil. We plan to throughly investigate the composition of the venom from this species, after the extraction, fractioning and identification of present compounds by means of mass espectometry. Once obtained the sequence of present peptides and proteins, we shall proceed in testing their alergenic and antibiotic capabilities. We hope to find and analyse useful substances for dealing with serious accidents and reactions to stings from this ant. During our investigations, we intend to morphologically describe the venom apparatus and try to correlate its structure and function to the biology of the fire ants.
