Effects of child's participation in management strategy choice of its own behavior

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of the participation of children in the decision process on the choice of strategies of handling of its proper dental attendance. The participants of this study will be 18 children with typical development, ages between 5 and 6 years, that need at least 3 sessions of restoring attendance, and a surgeon-dentist. 5 sessions are planned, that will be filmed in VHS. In the first session a video with the stage of six strategies of handling made with dolls will be shown (Video PE - Procedure of choice), that it will be used later in the choice sessions. From the second session, it will have the presentation in video, before the beginning of the each attendance, of the management occurrences of the child, filmed in the previous session, that involve episodes of collaborative and not collaborative behaviors. In each presentation of the management occurrences, he will be requested to the child who describes the attended event and what she would like that the dentist had made. The choice procedure will be carried through after that, in which the child will be stimulated to choose three strategies of its preference by means of the presentation of video PE. The dental attendance will after be carried through the presentation of the occurrences and the procedure of choice, and will occur of the form established in the memorandum of understanding. The dentist will have to use the techniques chosen for the child, in the treatment of the day. Only in 6ª, 8ª and 10ª sessions, will be allowed the use of physical containment, if the professional thus to decide. The behaviors of the participants will be registered, for categories, to each 15 seconds. It will be calculated the relative frequency of each category of behavior for dental routine, the frequencies for session for each participant and the average for all the participants in all the sessions. The data will be compared with the ones of two previous studies where it did not have possibility of choice on the part of the child.
