Abstract

This work was prepared from the referrals of Health Psychology applied to Dentistry, particularly in the Pediatric Dentistry. The aim was to describe the process of adherence of children to treatment in to a perspective that involves more autonomy to the child. The objective of this research was to analyze the effect of a procedure using a puppet and animated video as preparatory procedures to promote adherence behaviors of children submitted to a dental care. Two previous behavioral procedures to teach the children with a history of non-colaborative responses in a dental treatment were used. Participated in the study six children aged between 5 and 6 years who needed at least four sessions of restorative care performed by a single dentist. Were planned and recorded five sessions for dental care for each child. Before each session was realized a preparatory procedure with a puppet or a video conducted by a dentist during 10 minutes before sessions. The professionals were trained in the use of preparatory procedures through a previous script (Appendix 1). In this was described how the dentist should behave during in the procedures when demonstrated six behavior's management (Tell-Show-Do; Support, Relaxation, Active Participation; Distraction; Structuring of Time). The video contains six scenes of a dentist and a child, each corresponding to one mentioned strategy. The activity with plush puppet was the presentation of strategies for the child. In this activity, the dentist presents situations that characterize the use of behavior management strategies outlined in the script. The use of preparatory procedures used in this work allows us to infer that children benefit from teaching strategies pre-session. That is, children learn answers and collaboration of care and decrease the emission of responses of protest. Even though some of these children to these collaborative responses have taught their evasive responses (AU)
