Abstract

Modern industrial systems are very complex installations with high automation level and capability of isolated (islanded) operation due to usage of synchronous generators. Typically, the islanded operation occurs due to a fault in the distribution system. Since such installations are usually connected to distribution networks, these installations are subject to the technical requirements imposed by the distribution utilities. Thus, the disconnection of the industrial system with generation from the distribution system during islanding is a mandatory procedure. After the islanding detection, as soon as possible the electric separation between the utility and the industrial systems must be carried out. Normally, this disconnection is conducted by opening the circuit breakers installed in the low voltage side of the main industry transformer. As consequence, the utility can procedure with the network restorationm for example, through automatic reclosers. Immediately after the disconnection, it is necessary to start actions to guarantee that the industrial system can continue operating satisfactorily. Basically, three main actions must be taken: alterations in the governor regulator and excitation system controllers of the synchronous generators; alteration in the relays settings in order to guarantee selectivity and coordination of the protection systems and implementation of the rejection load system. Therefore, the objective of this project is to develop and investigate automatic methods for protection and control of industrial system with synchronous generators during islanded operation. With such development, the amount of load shedding can be minimized and security level of the isolated system can be enhanced.
