Abstract

The objective of this project is to characterize the texture and mineralogy of mantle xenoliths form SE Brazil, with special emphasis on the geochemistry of major and trace-elements of the main minerals (olivine, clino- and orthopyroxene, phlogopite and chrome-spinel) through detailed petrographic studies and analyses by WDS-Electron Microprobe and Laser-Ablation ICPMS. The samples selected for study come from Ubatuba, SP (the only known occurrence of mantle fragments in the State of São Paulo) and Coromandel, MG (collected in a kimberlite from the Alto Paranaíba Magmatic Province, a well-known site of mantle xenoliths which are nevertheless still poorly studied) will be studied; the latter are. It is expected that the results will contribute to the knowledge of the composition and evolution of the upper mantle, with direct implications to the processes of magma generation in this wide segment of the Brazilian Platform.
