Abstract

This project focuses on the development of methodologies for the use of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in the spectroscopic study of different categories of chemical species. Emphasis will be given in the development of nanostructured sensors for the analysis of species in solution by means of molecular spectroscopy. SERS active substrates will be prepared specifically directed toward the study of determined types of chemical substances. We propose the preparation of optimized nanostructured materials to be used in chemical sensing in the study of environmentally relevant compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organophosphorous compounds, thiocarbamates, organochlorides and triazine derivatives. Systematic spectroscopic studies of these species will also be developed. The preparation of the metallic nanostructures as substrates for enhanced spectroscopy will involve several methodologies, ranging from (I) silver and gold colloidal particles (nanorods, nanoshells, bimetallic particles); (II) gold and silver nanoparticles immobilized in films; and (III) nanostructured metallic films.
