Abstract Anaerobic gram-negative bacteria are predominant in indigenous microbiota of several mammals including human being. These bacteria are found in oral, intestinal and vaginal cavities. They are isolated from patients with different endogenous infections. Genus Bacteroides are formed by anaerobic gram-negative rods that constitute the intestinal resident microbiota in humans and animals. Bacteroides fragilis is an important microorganism because of production of different virulence factors such as capsules and proteolytic and hydrolitic enzymes. Some B. fragilis strains are able to produce a metalloprotease toxin called fragilisyn which is related to diarrhea processes and they are called enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF). Moreover, these anaerobic bacteria are involved in several infection processes and they are associated to morbidity and mortality of patients. In Brazil, the identification and detection of anaerobic bacteria in clinic laboratories is not a routine. The aim of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the presence of ETBF from immunocompetent children with and without acute diarrhea, as well as the presence of respective subtypes of the bft gene by using RT-PCR method.
