Abstract The exhaustion of the energy sources, mainly of fossil energy, has been motivated the development of new technologies based on renewable energies. Biodiesel is, nowadays, an outstanding fuel, since it is derived from renewable sources, as vegetables and animal oils. The biodiesel uses has some advantages under diesel fuel, as reduction of air pollution and its rapid degradability in the environment. However, the uses of only this fuel in diesel engines are still problematic, so it has been commercialized in blends with diesel fuel. In the literature, only studies about the impacts caused by the use of diesel and biodiesel blends to air pollution were founded, but studies of the impacts to other biotic systems - water and soil - and to exposed organisms were not carried out yet. Considering the necessity of protection health of living organism and to assure the ecosystem quality, this project aimed to analyze the genotoxic and mutagenic effects of diesel and biodiesel blends, which are widely used due to the commercialization imposed by law. The tests will be carried out using pure blends and in cases of leakages, by the spill simulations of diesel and biodiesel blends in water and soil. For that, the test system uses will be Salmonella typhimurium, Allium cepa and HepG2 cells. Chromosome aberration in the meristematic cells and the micronucleus in F1 cells will be evaluated in the Allium test. For the HepG2 cells will be applied the comet assay and the micronucleus assay. The choice of such test systems were determined, based on their sensitivity for mutagens detection, as well as the necessity of evaluations the health effects caused to different living organisms groups, since the environmental contamination is concern not only to humans, but also to all ecosystem. | |
