Abstract The purpose of this project is to approach dynamical and topological aspects of gauge theories with special attention paid to the geometry of instantons and sphalerons. We aim to provide the student with a strong background in the interface between Physics and Geometry, via the theory of connections on fiber bundles, index theorems and their relationship with anomalies in gauge theories. In a second step, the student will be presented to several subjects of ongoing research, with emphasis on instantons in curved spaces and the interplay between sphalerons and homotopy groups generators with minimizing properties. | |
