Abstract

Between the years of 1936 and 1938 there was in São Paulo city the Departamento de Cultura, bound to the municipal administration. As it was stated by Paulo Duarte, one of the creators of this project, it was a realization of a group of intellectuals’ dream, composed by Mário de Andrade, Sérgio Milliet e Rubens Borba de Morais. The aim of this research, which has Paulo Duarte’s Memórias as its main resource, is to study political, cultural and social conditions that made it possible that dream to become true during the Armando de Salles de Oliveira administration, the same one engaged in the foundation of the Escola de Sociologia e Política (1933) and also the Universidade de São Paulo (1934), events which counted on Paulo Duarte’s participation.
