Abstract The main aim of this research is to investigate the mechanism(s) underlying the establishment of gender and number agreement inside DPs, under the hypothesis that DP-internal agreement and sentential agreement are two of a kind. The focus of the research will be on data from DP-intenal agreement, predicative structures with a copular verb and also passive structures from Brazilian Portuguese (BP); such structures also display gender and number agreement, allowing a comparison between verbal and nominal domains. BP data are relevant because there is, in some varieties of the language, the possibility of agreement incongruences, apparently as a result of the constituent order. BP data will also be compared to data from other languages, and the possible generalizations will be confronted to existent approaches to agreement. The present research also aims at defining the heads where phi-features are interpretable, as well as investigating the influence of morphology over syntax, and clarifying the role of the definiteness feature for the establishment of agreement on natural languages.
