Abstract

Despite the ongoing changes in the energy market in Brazil due to energy deregulation, the Brazilian energy sector is still planned and operated using concepts, methodologies and tools that have been designed for the old vertically integrated power system. This research project has a main objective to describe, implement and evaluate a Hydrothermal Unit Commitment (UC) proposed for the deregulated market environment. The proposed mode takes into account some modeling aspects that are neglected in the model adopted by the Brazilian energy sector. When compared to the Brazilian actual model, the proposed UC model has the following contributions: i) the discretization of the UC problem is performed in a hourly basis, allowing the adoption of an effective short term energy market for a dominantly hydraulic system; ii) the UC model takes into account startup and shutdown costs iii) the interrelation between pool and bilateral markets are explicitly represented in the UC model. The work has also the purpose of evaluating the hydraulic generation loss function as an objective, by comparing the solutions obtained with and without such objective function.
